PT80 input buffer

I've been checking out different input buffers for a digital reverb pedal I'm working on and was curious about the input buffer for PT80 delay. It looks like this buffer was designed to boost the signal a little bit (about 10-fold) and was just curious if anyone knows what the advantage is for doing this.
