I'm trying to decide on a simple input buffer for a digital reverb circuit I've been working on. I was hoping to include the option of slightly boosting the guitar signal at the input to give the A/D chip more signal for better resolution. It's also desireable to have a buffer that inverts the signal.

I was wondering if a simple common source JFET amplifier like the one below would do the trick.

This circuit snippet is taken directly from the FET article series that appeared in Nuts and Volts a few years back.

Is it considered bad form to use an input buffer to boost a signal as opposed to keeping it at unity gain?
