By no means *ground-breaking* but fun:

First of all (following Jack's & Aron's suggestions) I used two 4.7uf electros joined neg to neg for the non-polarized ("a less heavy sound").
For R5 I used around 9k (less gain & distortion).
For the optional C6....I used a common .1uf (not electro).  The result:  Always clean...a tad of bass removed...and added sparkle.  The fun comes in by using a simple on/off switch to add a resistor in parallel to R5 (the switch connects it to ground).  When connected, it goes from clean to a touch of distortion w/the bass back in.  A slight dirty boost.
I used a 3.3k for the *fat boost*.  A smaller value (down to 1k) will give more bass & distortion...a higher one...the effect will be very subtle.
Simple but nice!

squid, check out RG's article on the muamp for more mods. Doing it the way RG suggests gets you much more gain.
