A/B box problems

I've made a simple A/B box as my first attempt at a pedal. When testing it on its own it works perfectly, but as soon as i plug an effect pedal into one of its outputs, the other output won't work. I then plugged another pedal in the other output, but no improvement. I've moved all the leads into every possible configuration with no luck. Any ideas as to a solution.

The box is just one input, going into a DPDT switch, which goes into the two outputs and an led for each. It is powered by a 9V power pack.

I had also read somewhere about using a resistor to eliminate the popping noise when switching channels, but cant find specifics. Where should this be attatched.

Thanks
