Looking at the schematic symbol, the *arrow* is the wiper which is the center  lug on the actual physical pot. From the *arrow* side of the schematic symbol, the numbering should go, lug 1, lug 2 (wiper), lug 3. This corresponds to the front or *shaft-on* view of the actual pot ( 1, 2, 3 from left to right). Since you are usually dealing with *rear* view when soldering pots, remember that the lugs go 3, 2, 1 from left to right when looking at the back. This is much better understood by looking at a pic or diagram, of which I think there are at least a few in the archives here. I still manage to get them backwards all the time  :oops: ! No worries, just swap the outer two wires on the lugs.  

Don't be afraid to make your first few thousand mistakes!
