Turbo Rat gain control

I just finished the "Rodent" clone from GGG website. I used the red LED's and a few other adjustments found there as well. The question is:
The gain control goes from cleanish sound at 0-.5 sweet distortion from .5-1.5 and everything beyond 1.5 on the pot is way compressed, muddy and fuzzy. Its like I have this tiny little window of adjustment on the pot. How can I spread the adjustment out over the full range of the pot? I want it to get fuzzy at around 9.5-10 instead of 1.5-2. Any suggestions?

IIRC all 3 pots are audio taper.  If you use linear, that might cause what your talking about.

all the pots are 100K audio taper. They were purchased at rat shak and are WAY under 100K, values are 78k, 84k and 88k. One of them is outside the 20% tolerance. Thats what I get for buying them from RS!  :x
