I've read the Technology of the Fuzz Face and I'm still having problems getting the gain for germanium transistor.  I has on Si Fuzz Face under my belt so I really need it dumbed down.  I've built the tranny tester shown on the site (with the 2.49k, etc.).  The main problem I have is I'm so new to this that I don't know what setting my digital multimeter should be on and how to interpret the readings I'm getting.  Also if I'm testing NPN germanium do I need to reverse to 9v?  Thanks ahead of time for any help.  I mean really dumb it down, thanks.  Kefestvog

Provided your multimeter is not autoranging, it should be on the mV setting.  Say you get .125V (or 125mV) with the switch open, and 1.250V with the switch closed.  Take the difference between the two: 1.250V-.125V = 1.125V, multiply that by 100 for a gain of 112.5.  That's all there is to it!

For NPN, reverse the battery leads and your multimeter leads.
