Total Novice needs info

I am a total novice at working with electronics, but am wanting to learn. My question is this....I want to know if anyone can tell me how to make an unlatching footswitch..much like the Boss FS-5U. I want to make one (if it is simple enough) that would be much smaller than the Boss FS-5U and fit better on my pedalboard. I would like to know how to build one of these that would be more conducive in size, but still have the functions one can use with these footswitches.

Again, I am a total novice, so the simpler the better in explanations, etc.

Thanks so much for any and all help. I am anxious to begin learning and am contemplating trying the beginner stompbox I have seen listed in the forum.
