2N5088 or 2N5089 whats diff.?

I have looked up these two trans they have about 400-900 hfe on both and seem to have the same characteristics if you were to buy them which one is the best or better for high gain stuff?  Central is exspensive Fairchild is really cheaper...Are these good for  stuff needing high gain or will they just get noisey... and stick to a lower gain of 250hfe  :?:
practice cause time does not stop...

I think 89 was just higher gain. They should be just great for pedals. They are used in Hammond's Highway89. (check homewrecker.com for clips. I love the sound)
