It's just two mini-boosters in series, the second with a voltage regulator to 'brown' the sound by dropping the voltage...

What about just a resistor and a largeish capacitor to gournd? like they do it on the tube amps?

I suppose that might work.
 But it would have to be connected to the circuit somehow.
