MPF102? Lower-est gain of the BSIAB Choices for Q's///
 J201 and *2n5457...I've seen recommended.
NTE458 highest gain of Jfets I know of, but 'harder' sounding distortion.
Also the BSIAB might have enough gain from the 2 mu's with 102's..and may show less tendancy to actup/oscillate.
 Sockets !!!
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

I tried MPF102's in my BSIAB - the pedal worked, but didn't sound very good to my ears.
Maybe  some resistor value changes in the circuit could help them sound better?

Connoisseur of Distortion

i built my BSIABII with 4 NTE458s and a 2N5457 (the one closest to output)

it has some serious oscillation issues, and i don't even have enough wire to get the board out of the box  :(

pedal board + buffered pedals = saving my life

I believe I've read from Ed himself that the circuit needs 2N5457s.

I tried mine with mpf102, and it gave a very nice "crunchy" overdrive.

The only thing to keep in mind is that the drain of the *lower* fet of the pairs is at 4.5v (half supply voltage), which took me some time swapping the mpf's i had until the voltages were right.

Don't forget biasing the fifth fet to 4.5v too ;)
Cut it large, and smash it into place with a hammer.

thankyou for the answers  :D

i'm quite disapointed because I can't have the marshall sound!! ahh

but hope is the last that dies (that's how you say that around here    )

Any BF245 couldn't get closer to it?

I just don't wanna go blind and find that I spent my money to something that doesn't sounds good
