Ugly Face problem

I am having a problem with an Ugly Face I have built. It seems to be work fine but sometimes after playing a while it goes dead no sound at all.

I found that this seems to have some thing to do with the threshold pot. If it's turned too far one way the 555 and even the battery start to get warm!? If I leave the pot in the center everything seems fine.

I have over the circuit backwards and forwards and everything seems to be correct. I checked the voltages against another Ugly face I had built that worked fine and they all seem to match.

Any suggestions?
