Small Stone volume drop mod did not work -- suggestions?

I built the tonepad small stone this weekend and applied the volume drop fix from here:
http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/bom/smallvlp.txt

... replacing the 4k7 resistor between q1 and q2 emitters with 10k.

It so did NOT work. ??? It hummed, caused the volume drop to be worse, and caused the volume to drop even further on the lfo dips.

Any suggestions? I was thinking of adding a buffer at the front after the bypass, or an extra transistor amp stage somewhere, but replacing a resistor or two would be a lot easier if I can find what will work.

On a more positive note, I succeeded with the univibe mod using a rotary switch, the vibrato mod with a switch, and the resonance mod with a pot. I am extremely pleased with the sound of this project. I play guitar and keys and actually built this mainly for a wurlitzer 206. An OBXa through the small stone sounds so good. Had only used digital phasers before -- never again.
