I built a couple of them using LM386 sourced from Radio Shack. Any 386 will work.

Okay but i have found a LM386-3 which is 1W and a LM386N which is 0,5 W  ???

Transmogrifox

use the LM386N
I think either would do fine, but I have used the LM386N with no problems for the SmashDrive

Smash drive is low power circuit. Even 0.5W is hotter than needed. It makes no difference.

I've tried several 386s and I like the JRC386BD the best in my test circuits. The second choice is the LM386-4 or -3.

So you are saying that LM386N is bad? or?  ???
