Sounds like oscillation or RF interference. I suppose it gets worse when you turn the volume down since the signal strength is lower and thus more susceptible to interference and noice. One of the gurus can probably enlighten us about this...

Try the usual tricks - shield the input, add a small cap to ground and possible a small series resistor at the input. Search for RF interference and oscillation on the forum.
