So, it seems the main problem with the MAX1044 is insufficient current.

But, what about the MAX660?

It provides 100mA.  And although the specs say it accepts only up to 6v, another poster has said that he's been using it with 9v for his MXR flanger for a couple of years now.

It's apparently a different pin-out from the MAX1044, but it appears it might be worth a try.  I'm not sure about things like proper cap values, etc., though.  Anyone have any suggestions?
