Pedal Board=Power Supply Doubt.

Hi guys, me again :p
Im going to put some effects in series(Blues Breaker, Ross Compressor, Parametric EQ, PT2399 Delay, Phase 45 and Tremulus lune, not in order, Wah Wah), and i was wondering, that it would be useless to use the Spyder power supply at geofex, right? Because all pedals are connected together..
Would you recommend to use a single 9v transformer, rather tham spyder? I could build any without trouble..

I'm thinking that you intend to put them all in one box, right?

If so, power filtering and regulation might be in order.

Kind of, each effect will be in a miniature rack.. you could put it that way if you want, theorically is the same, all enclosures are conductive, and touching each other.
Power filtering= capacitors?
Regulation= 7809 voltage regulator??

Would this be capable of carrying enough power for 7 FX pedals?

And, couple more questions.. would this be enough filtering? The larger the caps, the better? Isn't it better to add small resistance before the cap to improve its "functionality"?

Would this be hum, and noise free??

yeah, but smaller resistors do smaller filtering, nothing signifficant. Caps are cheap, you should use larger ones, put at lease 100uF after regulator. It should be pretty much noise free. Rule of the thumb is to use uF-s at least as much as you have mA's. 7 pedals doesn't draw more than 200mA, so with 220uF you're safe.

I think i'll be ok with the 500mA transformer i already have. So, i should make the diode bridge, Put a 2200uF cap( i have lots of them :P) Then the voltage regulator( i should use the one with heat "disipation", right?),and out of that i could put a large cap for every out, or one for all.. I did some drawing, lets take a look at them.(copy paste really :P)



I could add a voltage regulator for each "out" if that would make it better... i just want what's noise-less to feed 7pedal in series.
Or i could well take out from 12v, 7 lines in parallel, each with it regulator and pair of caps..

well.. whats better, the thing is that i don't know what is better :P

PS: Will a transformer like these one, rack mounted, need cooling?
Will 16v caps be enough?


Edit: the cap that is beside "i can put caps like these too" is mis-orientated.

there's no need for separate regulation, voltage will be 9V no matter of load. As for separate filtering, I don't think it's not worth it. Just daisy-chain all outputs.
By the way, you can't wire outputs in series, only in parallel.
You will need at least 15V to start with in order to get nice 12V (regulator will eat some), so before regulator 16V cap would be on margin...maybe it's better to get 25V for that posistion.
Transformer doesn't need cooling.
It's just how I'd do it :)

Ok im going to buy a 15v maybe 1 amper for future projects.. bah.. 500mA should be enough for 7 pedals and relays.. i think the odds of all being conected is, anyway, low.. I have some 50v caps.. maybewith a few i reach the desired value ;)

I must be getting a short somewhere thought because the Regulator chip is heating up and shutting down really fast therefore im not getting any output...i havnt had any time to take a look at it yet though

I did however get good readings without my plug connectors soldered on so thats where my short is im guessing.

build cost was about $30

Oh, thanks a lot moody. Do you believe this is better than the other proposed?? Will it be capable enough for feeding 7 pedals?

One question, what are the regular caps for(not polarized)'? and the diodes(not the bridge of diodes), and the resistors :P well pretty much everything :P the highest the value of the caps the better?

I can't see the value of diodes.. which is??

If you look at data sheets for regulators, you sometimes see reversed diodes across regulators...... that's because some regulators HATE to have reverse voltage across them (that is, higher voltage at output than input).
How can that happen? Well, if you have a really large capacitor on the output...... and that might happen, if you connect enough effects to it, each with its own filter cap. Sometimes, 'more' isn't 'better'..

you can use any 1N400X diodes, I use 1N4007 for high voltage and 1N4003 for lower

The lm317 has an adjustable voltage output, the resistors set this voltage. This regulator chip is substantially quieter (at least in theory  :icon_wink:) than the 7809 type, so I used a circuit similar to this (GGG's ?). LM317 also requires more supporting parts, if you download a data sheet you will find it becomes clear.
