I guess I should have said, in the past, higher learning types have dismissed the effect in conversations I've had regarding audio gear.

Sounds like they're suffering from the effects of ESR, or Equivalent Scholastic Resistance.  I know of one particular higher-learning-type that has good specs in that department.  Thanks RG for the lucid explanation.
