I've just constructed the super-simple smokey, with switchable gain and a headphone/speaker out, however, I would like to also ad some type of volume control. How would I go about doing so?

check out www.runofgroove.com, their ruby is basicaly the same thing and it has pots for gain and volume

Well I set up a volume control but I don't have the right pot to do the trick. I instead opted to set up an SPDT switch to switch between a straight signal path, and one with a 3k9 resistor in the mix. This drops the volume level low enough when switched so that I don't blow my eardrums out when using headphones. I'm using the same jack for headphone and speaker out, so this was a big issue. The wiring scheme I have now is like this:
