Hi all,

I want to build GGG's LPB2 as my first pedal. I've looked at the wiring diagram, and would like to add an LED to it.

The wiring diagram is:

Can someone please draw in how to wire an LED to the above diagram?

thanks,
Charlie

Are you planning on using a dpdt or a 3pdt switch?
That would help to figure out what drawing to give you.

I know there's a section on switching at GGG, but I'm not sure where - but check out the "offboard wiring" .PDF at Tonepad, (click on "effects projects" on the left, and  you'll find it the list) it shows you diagrams for pretty much any switching/LED combo you'll need.

Well since the above diagram has a DPDT switch, I figured I'd use one too.

I've checked on Tonepad, but it looks like only one of those wiring diagrams has an LED drawn in, and that is with a 3PDT switch. Actually, if someone can show me how to wire the above diagram to a 3PDT switch, I think I could figure out how to wire up the LED too.

thanks for the help,
Charlie

bump?

i've also found this diagram: http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/diagrams/switch_lo_3pdt_tb_dcjack.gif for the 3PDT switch, but can't figure out how to apply it to the first diagram i posted. can someone help me out?

thanks,
Charlie

Hello, and welcome to the forum!

This page should answer all your switching questions:
http://www.diystompboxes.com/wiki/index.php?title=DIY_FAQ#TRUE_BYPASS_AND_SWITCHING

The rest of the FAQ is great reading as well.
I didn't see the Millenium Bypass mentioned there, so check it out- a way to get true bypass and an LED with a DPDT:
http://www.geofex.com/Article_Folders/Millenium/millen.htm
There are more links at the end of the article.

You didn't mention if you have any experience with electronics or building, but if this is your first pedal and you're looking for a booster, there is an entire subforum devoted to first-timers building an NPN Boost:
http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?board=6.0
It has parts lists, where to get them, step-by-step instructions with photo tutorials along the way, and a forum of folks ready to help you out if it doesn't fire up the first time.

Good luck, and let us know what you decide!

I've got plenty of soldering experience... just not with effects pedals. So I just want to make sure my layout is right.

Here is what I gathered from the FAQ: to convert from DPDT to 3PDT, I simply ignore the middle column of lugs and connect everything the same. Then add the LED to the center lug? I've drawn it in here:

Is this correct? (It can't be that simple... can it? haha)

It is that simple, except that the top center lug of the switch needs to connect to the positive (red in the drawing) terminal of the battery or adaptor so that when you switch in the circuit the LED is illuminated, and when you switch the circuit out (bypass) the LED is off.

I just updated the image above. Like that?

thanks so much for the help.

That is correct.

Each stomp of the switch connects each center-row lug to its respective top-row lug (let's call this "position one") or to its respective bottom-row lug ("position two").

In position one, CIRCUIT IN (wire to C1 on board) connects to INPUT, LED resistor connects to 9V+ (illuminating LED), and OUTPUT connects to CIRCUIT OUT (from volume control).

In position two, CIRCUIT IN is grounded (this helps reduce noise in some circuits, especially in high-gain situations), LED resistor connects to nothing, so the LED does not illuminate, and OUTPUT connects to INPUT, which is a direct bypass of everything else.
