Sorta Technical Question

I have a FF that if you crank the gain and play lower notes it actually sounds muted and gets quieter.  What is this, and is there a way to lessen it slightly?  The interesting part is that I have a Ge FF (AC128s) and a Si FF (MPSA18s!) that do pretty much the same thing.  I like it, I think it makes it sound "fuzzier", but I'd just like to reign it in a little bit and understand what causes this phenomenon.

It sounds like the trannie is biased wrong.

No, it's more like too much gain, but this explanation doesn't work with the Ge transistors.
