Sometimes it's a necessary evil.  I know I don't scroll through more than the "main" page of messages, so if I don't check in for a few days I miss it unless there's a "bump".

You post on one day and get little or no response.  Maybe the right person didn't see it because they skipped a day on the forum.  You and others missed out on some valuable input from that person, so you bump your post to see if that person will see it.

Now, if you keep bumping everything all the time that could get annoying.  In baseball it's "3 strikes and you're out"!  If my question was really important to me, and nobody answered, I might bump it once.  I don't see the harm it that.
