I use a couple different techniques for making boxes. I don't have a bandsaw (yet).
I usually glue the short sides to a thick top and then thin out the top on the table saw except for about a 1/4" at the top and bottom.
Then glue on the sides and cut a bottom plate from luan 1/4" plywood.
I recess the inside in the pot/switch placements so the bushings will thread.
I also recess the walls of the long sides before gluing them on. (forstner bits)

Then you have the sanding x4 grits, radiusing the edges top and bottom, a week or more of finishing and wet sanding...blah, blah, blah.
Yes, lots of work.

I like to use spray poly for top coats and to flatten out a gloss finish. less stinky as well! Dries fine in the winter as well. Snowing outside here right now! Laquer seems to chip and even worse turn white when bumped.
