hi guys,
i decided i dont drill enough to warrant buying a drill press, so im going to get a decently cheap handrill so i can drill my own enclosures. do you think this will get through the good ol' hammond enclosures, enough for a 3pdt or dc jack?

+ some drill bits, i think 1/2" is the biggest i need. thanks guys!

it may work.  generally you want to drill to have really fat RPM, that one u have shown goes up to 1100 RPM.  a standard drill press goes up to 3100 RPM.

srv like I told you save up a bit more for a drill press. They are cheap, I think I got mine for $50 Canadain and its quite nice.

You just can't beat the drill press/step bit combonation. Here's an affordable press: http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_36883_36883
If it ain't broke...   ...it will be soon.

Harbor Freight sells much the same thing for $42.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

That's what I thought too, but it wasn't listed on their site. However I just got 3 sale fliers from them in the mail, so I'll check them too.

I'm just finished to drill my boxes. I use a hand drill and it's a bit harder... Go for the drill press, it's perfect for PCB's!!! Just make sure the chuck can hold a 1/2" drill bit for footswitch and DC Jacks.

Has anyone any experience of those jigs that you can buy so that you can use a hand drill as a drill press?
There is an example here of what I mean.

I am tossing up between getting a hand drill and one of these (so that I can use the hand drill for other hand drill-ish applications) and getting a drill press because I will need it for guitar applications and borrowing a drill when necessary for other stuff. Thoughts?

As long as your not trying to mass produce anything, I think a hand drill is fine.  I simply use a 14v rechargable hand drill and a irwin step drill bit.  Works fine for me.

If you're constantly building pedals then I could see springing for a drill press.  I just haven't reached that high a volume to warrant the extra cost.

well im going to be building 6 or 7 pedals from now until the midsummer probably so its not for heavy duty work. the press does look like a good investment

I'm sure you could find other uses for it other than pedal building (gasp!)   ;)

Absolutely go with a Unibit.
