i just finished the modern version and i quite like it, it's very close to the BD-2 but with a little more bass, wich isn't bad...

i found the "Oldcake" 77's version of the pedal, it doesn't use the same chip, did anyone tried both and how do they compare soundwise?

I don't know what you mean w modern version.

The HC 77 was build around the 741C chip and the values and the circuit layout too had been chosen to match this chip and to archieve a "special" sound. A 77 clone will sound excellent, like the original, if you use a really good NOS uA747C, with a weak or noisy 741 it will sound like crap.

Newer HCs are build around the 071 chip which sounds much brighter and harsher than the 741 when used in the original 77 circuit.
Crowther modified/adapted the 77 circuit for the quiter 071 chip , so the new circuit is able to deliver a sound similar to that of the 77 HC.

Since 77 Crowther modified/optimized the HC-circuit a few times, don't know why, but I think he tried to improve the sound of the HC.
