could someone please explain the pinout on this one:

I asume this component can substitute a VTL5C3 if the middle pin is unconected ?

This is not a midle point on the photocell, it's two photocells with common pin.
Use the middle (4) pin with one of the other(5 or 3) to substitute to a VTL5C3 (instead of VTL5C3/2)

Would it be possible to use both pin 3 and 5 connected together (as one) in a circuit that calls for a VTL5C3 ?

stephanovitch

use only the common pin 4 with only one of the other(3 or 5).
You will have an equivalent of the VTL5C3

Are the three lugs supposed to work as in a potentiometer?
Are there any ic substitutes for this part?
Or is there some configuration of two ga trios I can use to get this same function?

Thanks in advance I really want this part but it's pretty expensive I know I'll need a bunch if can serve as a potentiometer

No.

I'll save your next question: the only likely part for what you want to do is DigiPots, which need some form of digital controller, have very low voltage breakdowns (many are 5V max), and mostly need DC bias on the audio path.

The electronic-control "exact pot replacement" is a motorized pot, which opens new avenues of fun/frustration.
