For painting a box i drive 4 drywall screws into a piece of wood a similar dimension to the box. The drywall screws are spaced so  the open side  of the box will slip over the screws and rest on them . Level the screws so the box won't rock then stick small pieces of double sided foam tape onto the screws then fix the box to the tape on the screws. You then have a handle to use when you're painting and working the box without having to actually handle the box itself. That probably makes no sense at all!

I use tin food cans as a stand to hold my boxes for painting.
Just squeeze the open end a bit and fit the box on top.
