I am building Supersonic's Rat Mod, and I was wondering what alternative transistors I could use as I can't get the 2SK117.

J201 or 2n5457 should work.

I am told that 2SK117's are really good. What would the improvement be over the stock BF245A?

If you need/want an exact match for the 2SK117, the 2SK30A is a good option.  I had a recent pedal rehab project that needed replacement 2SK117s, which I could not locate for a reasonable price.  I found NOS 2SK30As at http://www.effectsconnection.com/oscommerce/product_info.php?products_id=215 for $0.30 each.

You probably don't need an exact match for the 2SK117, so the aforementioned JFETs will likely work fine.  However, if you find that you need/want an exact match, the 2SK30A will work fine and not break the bank in the process (at least for the time being.)
If you're building or modding a DS-1, please check out my 'Build Your Own DS-1 Distortion' doc. Thanks!

The fet in a Rat is just a buffer, so it's unlikely that one will sound better than another.

Aye aye, right now I'm at $48.85, trying to keep it under $49 to avoid another $2 shipping ( I'm not particularly high on cash =P)

Thanks for your help  :)

2N5485 and 2N5292 are fairly exact replacements if you can get them. Pinout is different.

The 2SK117 is no longer in production except by special order last time I checked.
The 2SK30A IS in current production as of a few months ago, as the "K30A".

J201 and 2N5457 are not exact replacements except for odd selected ones at the edges of the distribution.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

They aren't but the original transistor is used as a voltage follower in the circuit. This circuit is here -> http://www.illuminist.tk/

Would the 2SK184 or the 2SK170 be suitable substitutes for the SK117?
