Can I do this Penfoldly by using 1N4001s for instance to drop the voltages then a hefty electrolytic to smooth it out? My mind's gone blank on this!

Yes, that should probably work with 5 diodes each way. You could also use a 7812 and a 7912 if the -/+ 15V source isn't a stable one.
