I built this one and I like it very much, it seems that some low count parts' fx are good as well as more complicated circuits...
Well, I tried 2n5457 and 2n5088 but nothing that impresses me...Than put a bc108b in it and it screams!!!
No 2n3904 around atm...

So I'd like to know your experience...Which tranny did you use for this simple project?

I built it with 2N5088 and I really liked it. I never boxed it up though because I already have a few boosters that I use. I've been thinking about boxing it up and giving it to a freind of mine. It really is a very good sounding circuit.

I used a BC109-work-alike (NTE123A).

Sounds good. It gives you a fuzzy, woman tone-like feel with the knob turned full.
Also, I believe the gain was over 300 but not over 400, can't remember specifically (about 330 IIRC).

I also tried a 2N5088 but I didn't like the sound.

A lot of times they're better! :icon_wink:

I like a 2n2222 in mine.

I used a 2N5089, but this was my 1st project... so I remember liking it a ton, but I'm not sure if it wasn't just because I had built a successful pedal lol. It was too long ago to recall specifics on tone.

I've thought about throwing one together again; that's a great circuit.

Tried a few, to be honest.

I remember the BC 107 / 108 / 109 route being by far the best sound.

We're fond of a bit of grit around here.

Also, the 109 I had was in a 'tin can' case - so it added extra Mojo too...

Yeah for my ears the 10* give the best results, and yes I agree on the Mojo side...
Here it is with a bc108b...

Waiting some trannies to come, I bought a few different to just see the differences they give in such small circuits...

Oooo nice pic!

2N5457 ?  JFET ?

Most of these things seem best with moderate hFE devices.  e.g. 2N2222A, various golden oldies, or maybe piggybacked high hFEers.

brett, I believe you didn't read all my prev. post - it's a BC108b
The wirings are made on the fly, just to hook it up and see if it works...

I just went with a 2N2222A in mine and also love it :)
I't doing a good job driving my simple octave up I'm working on too.

cab42

I have set mine up with switchable trannies.  2N2222 and an OC140 germanium.

Both sounds great.

I have tried a few others 2N5088, 5089 and BC549, but liked the two above best.

I received the trannies I ordered, and had fun trying them all...

BC108 b and c
BC548 b and c
2N3904
2N5088
2N5089

Altough I didn't find such big difference among them, I'd stick to 2N5088 and BC108 both b and c
I had fun discovering how trannies could be swapped (at least in such a small circuit like this...)

Did the same experiment with the LPB2. Results are the same, little difference to my poor ears changing tranny.
