here's my newesr design.  it's also my entry for FX/X this month.  it's called the Toecutter and it's dedicated to the churning sludgy tone of all my fave doom metal bands.  there's more info in the Oct contest thread, but here's the basics-  a schem and link to a clip.

good stuff!

what kind of transistor are these? germanium? how high their hfe is?

the diodes clip the signal or its a temperature instability trick?

thanks a lot!

the GT313As are one of the Russian "Flying Saucer" germanium types with the internal resistor, so testing their Hfe is a problem.  they sound great though, and seem to have plenty of gain to me.  the diode thing is some thing i came up with when messing around with this transistor.  i have been told that it  raises the leakage, but it seems to stabilize the bias ???. i'm not sure about the actual theory of what is going on, and noone has really been able to tell me for sure yet.  all i know is that when  hooked up this way, there is a nice compression that isn't normally there, and i would guess some clipping.  it could have something to do with the internal resistance in the transistor as well.

i go a little bit more in detail about the circuit here-

I had to save it to my desktop. It came in as "toecutter sample_m4a"

I then renamed it to be toecutter sample.m4a.

After renaming it, winamp and other media programs were able to recognize it.

Sounds very sludgy!
