How's this for a drilling template?

Not really a template, but just measurements.  I made this in about 30 mins using Google's Sketchup, a free 3-D Drawing program.  The best part, the files can be saved as models and shared, so you can take this and edit hole placement for your own usage.  The guidelines can also be hidden, which is what I would send to PPP.

Just thought I'd share my success.  I'll be sharing more after finals week.   :)

SketchUp is cool. I used it to mock up custom boards and layout for customers when I was building pedal boards. I know showing them a 3D layout of their pedals on the custom board before we cut any materials saved us a ton and helped clinch a few sales too. The "Wow Factor" was awesome.

Is there a bevvy of enclosures available in the SketchUp library now? I'll be people have already turned out wickedly accurate renditions of most of the Hammond-sized boxes by now. I was always surprised at how many real renderings of pedals I was able to find near the end of my board building career. I started out just doing boxes to show placement because I can't render real life to save my own:

i didnt have much luck finding existing models of enclosures, so i just made a block to the size of the dimensions published by PPP.  Easy enough.  After I verify that this works with them over a few builds, I was planning to share my designs so that other could benefit.

Did you look in the SketchUp3D warehouse?

There are lots of accurate models of commercial pedals there.

+1 -- that's where  I was getting my models from. Although I don't see many Hammond or other enclosures in there. Hmm...time to give back perhaps?

yeah, i didnt find it very useful for this.  i just needed the hammond dimensions.  i'll upload there later in the week though.

Does Google Sketchup import IGES or STEP files? If so, you can get the model directly from http://www.hammondmfg.com/dwg.htm
This is handy because you the screw mounting locations and side angles are intact in these models, and they are totally accurate.

I use these files on Solidworks.

Ah, that's too bad. Never used Google Sketchup myself, since I already use other CAD softwares. If they can implement STP/IGS importing, that would be really handy. I did notice there is a 3rd party app for importing IGS, but I don't know if I would trust it.

I downloaded a couple of trials that convert .igs and .stp files to SketchUp. The resulting drawings seem overly complex for laying out effects, and it is a real pain to simplify them. It took me an hour just to do a lid... heh.

These are pretty much the stock conversion. I changed the shading to make them look more realistic. The conversions were way too big, so I measured the conversion and compared it to the spec sheet. I ended up scaling them by a factor of .03937007874015748031496062992126 to make the measurements exact. I spot check them to the spec sheet, and they are exact.

I converted the 1590A, 1590B, and 1590BB. They're all in one file. http://mikesblog.americasdebate.com/uploads/1590_Enclosures.skp

I have 8 days left on my trial, so let me know if you want me to convert any more.

Mike: you should contribute those to the SketchUp community. Google will host the files and everything for you.

mike was the one that told me about this.

Heh... I wish I could claim credit, but I just used a free trial of a software package: http://www.sycode.com/products/index.htm#SketchUp_Plug-ins

I used the IGES and STEP converters. Ten day trials, and then $195 each (!) to use it beyond the trial. Of course, I used a virtual pc, so if I need it after ten days, I can just fire up a different image and restart the ten days.  :icon_wink:
