hello,

i was looking into the byoc envelope filter / auto wah as a potential stand-in for the vintage mutron III (which is hard to find and very darned expensive).  i want that early police era andy summers 'hole in my life' sound (which he used a mutron III for).  i asked byoc about this and the reply from keith was 'not really' when i asked if the pedal would do the job.

any suggestions out there from those who know what i'm yabbering about?  ie potential mods to the byoc which would make it a closer representation, or even other pedals which are much more affordable...?

If you're looking for something to build (I know you mentioned buying in there) then I would recommend the meatball. It's a really variable envelope filter. I built one and I like it. Pretty complex, though. The Geofex site used to have a link to the mutron III schematic, but it is 404 right now. I may have the schematic sitting around to email to you if you'd like.

In terms of buying, a Qtron is probably close.

Hope that helps.

Link seems to be working.

Doesn't GGG have a Mutron III board for sale?  I thought I had one in my ToDo stack.

The Neutron *is* a clone of the Mutron, part for part, with the exception that
there are added options for powering from an single power supply /battery instead
of the dual that the original required, and added options for the opto resistor part,
which is hard to find (but Small Bear has them).

GGG has PCBs from my layout for the Neutron. Hundreds of people have built
working clones from them.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

Worth a try, I can order some NSL32's or something if needed.

The Penguine of course should have one of these effects on his guitar tone !
