I've always used the little yellow AVX caps, but I can only find a few values left on the Mouser site. Most are listed as obsolete or discontinued. Is there another online source for these? Anybody know why they're gone?

Those look like one option (smallbear)
Still pretty distressing...

Thanks Steve. I may give those a shot. I just hate that I was only paying 7-10 cents apiece for the others. I also noticed that the metal film resistors at mouser have doubled in price since my last order.

+1 on this info.  I've never seen an interruption in the flow of AVX boxed film caps I've been buying from Mouser.  Mind you, I have never shopped by part number (I alwasy search the site), so the transition from non-RoHS to RoHS-compliant caps didn't trip me up.

There's plenty of the newer AVX boxed film RoHS-compliant caps available at Mouser.  (Thank goodness...I'm a bit addicted to them. :) )

Here's what the Mouser site says...

AVX LEADED FILM CAPACITORS

AVX is discontinuing the complete range of leaded film capacitors
and suggest that customers take advantage of alternative AVX
solutions.

Customers currently ordering the BF or BQ film capacitor series
should consider a conformally coated option, the SkyCap series SR21,
SR30 or SR40 depending on their requirements.  Other alternatives
include Molded Radials (i.e. MR05 and MR06).

Good info, Phil.  Thank you for posting it.

I currently don't have time to take a detailed look at the specs on the replacement series of caps, but if they are as small or smaller than the boxed caps, this shouldn't be an issue.  They should be fine for me.

That's really disappointing. My info was older, of course.

I really like box caps. They're made by other companies than AVX, notably Evox/Rifa, Kemet, Vishay/Roderstein, and others.

But AVX was handy and available. If you like box caps, check the other brands. Just hit "radial" in the selector filter for caps in mouser and you'll see them pop up.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

There are the Wima ones...  Is it me or they are expensive ?

Doesn't Xicon make those red box shaped film caps? I've got a bunch of their 1uF caps, they are quite inexpensive and sound fine (i.e. transparent). I'll check on this later but I'm pretty sure they are Xicon.

I've recently bought box caps by Rifa, Kemet, Vishay, and probably others. I think they all work just fine, are small, reasonably priced, and I like the colorful look it gives my PCBs to have all the different brands.

WIMA does seem to be a little more expensive.
