If I need a 500K Pot  but only have a 100K Pot can I combine the 100K pot with a 400 Ohm resistor to get the 500k?

I'm guessing you meant kOhm, not Ohm, and no you can't. That'll just give you a pot that only has a quarter of the range you need.

Generally you wouldn't want to do this as you would be losing 80% of the adjustable range (4/5=80%).  However, in some cases it may be okay to replace the potentionmeter.  Post the schematic and someone here will be able to say yay or nay.

Who wants the 500k in there, and why ?
iow, 100k might just do such a fine and similar trick that you'd become fond of it.
