Hello all!
i've just recieved a dispatch note for my latest order. 10 miniature pentodes of the oldschool russian clan. How exciting! So, what can i build with them? I know rick's done a few projects with them, and i'm looking forward to giving these a go, cos they've got some characteristics which, if i'm correct, means i could run them on pretty low voltages. there's a serious lack of info on them, but here's what i can find:

or better yet, how's your russian?

This is what the actual ebay listing said:
Type    pentode
Application    HF voltage amplification
Cathode type    oxide,direct heating
Filament voltage,V   1,2
Filament current,A   0,056-0,068
Anode voltage,V   60
Grid1 voltage,V   0
Grid2 voltage,V   45
Steepness,mA/V   1,2
Reverse grid current,uA   0,3
Microphnic noise,mV   130
Socket type   flexible

I know there's the option of overdrives, and if there's the possibility of running them like a triode, i know EXACTLY what i'd like to build, but outside of OD's, what else can i make? How about something like a tremolo, phaser or anything like that?

thanks all.

How much do you want to learn, and how much can you pay a teacher?

For free: any pentode can work as triode. Strap G2 to Plate. If G3 is not internally wired to cathode, tie it to plate also.

This tube will give triode Mu near 10 and plate resistance near 10K at 3mA. For high gain, you want to work nearer 1mA; or rather, at 50K-200K load.

Way too much teaching. This stuff is possible in tubes, but not a one-minute teaching.

well that's a good start anyway. Cheers PRR!

If it's easy enough to get it to work like a triode, then i've a few ideas for some tasty overdrives, and i came across a few articles which are a good intro for a tremolo. Any suggestions for sites/books/whatever to read up on some more?

I bought the book, it is really very good, lots of applicable info to what we do in 1 place!

And create a free acc't here:  http://www.wattkins.com/forum  <multi-forums to get ?'s answered specifically about tube circuits!!

I think the 1st thing to do is get your power supply nailed down, then make a simple triode-strapped gain stage, whereby you'll get some results quickly to keep you motivated....you can get some imitation power-tube distortion with strapped pentodes (in a way).   Keep it safe - watch those caps residual charge!!!
