I'm looking at building this as my first project (schematic and parts list etc. linked from the right)
http://gaussmarkov.net/wordpress/circuits/the-deluxe-bazz-fuss-from-home-wreckercom/

I'm having trouble tracking down it's transformer in my country. It says that you can leave it out but it can potentially effect the tone for the worse, particularity if used with other pedals. What would happen if I used a different transformer? Is it worth trying or should only the exact one be used?

Here's the datasheet on the specified part (42TM018)
http://www.mouser.com/catalog/specsheets/XC-600134.pdf

and here is what is available to me (obviously excluding the first):
http://www.jaycar.com.au/productResults.asp?CATID=19&SUBCATID=378&keyform=CAT&SUBMIT.x=16&SUBMIT.y=11

Could any of these potentially have a desirable outcome?

Oh and while I'm at it, more of a general question. With yer capacitors are different types interchangeable? Like can you use green caps instead of box etc?
And what type of polarised electrolytic cap is generally used in effect units? There seems to be a couple of different types.

Welcome to the forum!

The purpose of the transformer is to simulate the impedance of a guitar pickup. Other transformers should work but you may want to try some different ones to see which ones preserve the sound of the bazz best when running the bazz after some other buffered pedal/signal. If you plan to plug your guitar directly in to the bazz, the transformer doesn't really provide any benefit, unless you combine it with some tone shaping. See Jack Orman's article on guitar pickup simulation at AMZ-FX for more info...

Different types of caps are interchangeable, but may give you a slightly different sound/feel. It's probably not that critical in the bazz. As long as a cap's voltage rating is higher than the power going to the circuit, no worries.
