Superfuzz Transistors?

Hi all,
I'm looking to build a Univox Superfuzz, and I noticed it used some fairly "exotic" parts, particularly its transistors.
It uses a combination of 2SC828s and 2SC539s. What more common transistors would work in place of these?

1) Go to a datasheet website.
2) Type in the transistor part number.
3) Look up the datasheet.
4) Look for suitable substitutes. (Usually at the bottom of the page)

Here is a good place to look:

The short answer is that it will work with most small signal NPNs if you get the proper pin (i.e. collector, base, emitter) into the proper hole on the PCB.

I've built superfuzzes from many types, including 2N3904 and 2N5088. Note that the 2SC parts are based ECB, not EBC like the 2N5088.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.
