The "Q" resistor is in parallel with the inductor. It's purpose, according to the patent documents, is to lower the Q of the circuit because it was found to be too high without that resistor in place.

So if you have a 33K (or 100K or whatever) resistor in parallel with an inductor that has a DC resistance of only 18 ohms, if you look for continuity across the resistor it's going to look like it's "shorted" on a multi-meter because of the inductor in parallel with it.

I think your disparity between the effected/bypassed signal and lack of quack has to do with the buffer removal. You have to compensate for it in other places. You probably need to mess with the gain of Q1 some. Try different values for the resistor on the emitter of Q1. And maybe a different transistor for Q1 also.
