Switch Wiring + Ground

I have a question in regard to a pedal i am currently building.
After making about a dozen or so pedals, i've noticed that when in the "off" position, true bypass wiring has the input of the FX  shunted to ground.
Why the input?
Would shunting the output of the fx work?
What if you had both shunted to ground when in the "off" position?  Would there be any negative effects?

Thanks

IIRC the input is shunted to ground to prevent possible POPing sounds when the effect is re-engaged.

I used to shunt the Input to ground when I first started building. With the last several builds, I drifted away from that practice and so far I HAVE NOT had any problems with on/off circuit popping.

Then again, all of the circuits I have built since then have implemented the pull-down resistor on the Input.  ;D
