Tried RG Keen's test circuit as well as Smallbear's simpler method... the prob i seem to be having is that when looking for leakage, with my DMM set to 300mA range, i get no reading. If i change it to the 20v range, i see a slight difference between battery voltage and Collector voltage (if my battery is 8.93, my collector might show 8.89, etc.).  For gain, with DMM set to 300mA, i've been getting 0.6, 0.7, etc., which i'm comfortable assuming is 60-70 hFE range, but I can't seem to get anything more specific. FWIW, my DMM is a Greenlee.

I took the easy way out and bought a transistor tester.

that way I dont need to breadboard a transistor tester every time I need one. the only down side is that you cant test for leakage and you cant choose your test voltage/current. it works good for sorting a big bag. would be better with sockets though. and it tells you the pin out so you dont have to grab the data sheet.
