I built this on a PCB from Tonepad   http://www.tonepad.com/getFileInfo.asp?id=117

I wired it to this scheme     offboard wiring 1  http://www.tonepad.com/getFileInfo.asp?id=76    the difference being i wire black from batt to 9v in (as instructed) and red to input jack ring. This works fine wired outside the box but when in yhe box it merely gives a very faint effect. It bypasses fine. I realize this is a ground problem but I have no idea how to make it work

Thanks for any help

Jeff

if you made it pnp as in the Tonepad scheme, the black (-) goes to the point where the 22uf, 220k and the 2 x 10k's are.

and red to input jack ring.

the red (+) goes to ground in the end. the ring as you hooked to is correct, which will connect to ground (+) when a jack is inserted

unless I read it wrong, it looks like the off board wiring is for npn (-) ground

Try hooking the (+) battery directly to ground and the (-) battery directly to (-) [where the 22uf, 220k and the 2 x 10k's are] and see if it works

always think outside the box

Thanks for the help but I'm still stuck. I know it works out of the box but not when buttoned in. Can someone point me to a wiring scheme for PNP?

Thanks

As you say it points to a grounding issue but are you grounding the bottom of the board to the box accidentally?  How are you mounting the board in the box?  GGG has wiring diagrams for tonebenders: http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/projects/73-fuzz-tones/161-tone-bender-3-knob-boutique.  Also check out the section on the fuzz faces.
