Perhaps you can help:

how can i get this sound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaRnGMh6k4E

Its somehow a "clinical" or "industrial" distortion sound. Wondered if i can do it with some mosfet clipping stages.
Any suggestions for a distrotion circuit/pedal to get this kind of sound?

The bottom end is really tight - I've achieved this on custom pedals by using a small series input cap - sometimes as low as 470pf (or make the input cap switchable off a rotary control).

Surprisingly, a Bazz Fuss with a 2n5088 + 1N4148 + small input cap will get a pretty close for the main rhythm sound. It may need driving a little harder than standard, with an additional gain stage - depends on what pickups you have. It also has a gated effect, though this is useful in a live situation. YMMV.

thanks for the answers! Dr.Boogey is halfway built (waiting for the pots). Spitfire looks interesting...
Different input cap sizes may do it...gonna try that first.

Actually that Doom Unit clip doesn't have a ton of gain.  Play with the input or coupling caps to get 'tight' enough for you.  Or, switch them like on the Spitfire.  You'll need a tube amp with just enough preamp gain to notice, and you want the master to 11.

it is not the "amount" of distortion that im looking for, but this sterile sound. Similar sound: Fear Factory. Or old Pantera "Vulgar Display of Power". Dimebag used a solid state Randall Amp afaik. It is no warm tube sound, it is a somehow cold, sterile, "egg cutter" sound. Like you tune all mids out of an amp.

Thanks for any suggestions.

This mid thing is very relevant, with that you see why most "brutal metal" pedals usually have a more elaborate EQ setup to be able to get that scooped sound (a tweaked big muff tone control section can kind of do it). That an the afromentioned choice of coupling caps before gain stages to keep gain low enough on the bass frequencies to not have everything turn into flabby mud.

I think they have a bit of boost in the 200~800Hz range, less emphasis in the V30 range (4K), so get some EVM12Ls :)

The Drop tunings really change the harmonics and give the tone that doom sound.  Play with the Duncan Tone Stack BMP and you can get a pretty good scoop around 1000 to 1500Hz if you don't want to used active filters.

I still like Doug Hammons Sweet 16 petal for that sound, but I'm not sure if he likes me promoting it.  ;)
