I'm working on this circuit. It's my first time with the LM555. After playing around with it, I have it doing what I want... almost. It's acting as a tremolo for a fuzz circuit. It produces this horrible ticking though. I thought that if I could soften the on/off square wave of the LM555 that that would help. How would I soften the wave and or extinguish the ticking?

Replace with 7555. No crowbar.  ;)

Change over the CMOS version of the 555. The NE555, LM555, and other bipolar versions are (in) famous for pulling monstrous pulses of current through power and ground when they switch. That is one likely source of your tick.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

incorporates a number of design elements (including the use of the COMS 555) that make it blessedly quiet.

incorporates a number of design elements (including the use of the COMS 555) that make it blessedly quiet. I used R. G.'s suggestion of separate ground busses for oscillator and modulator, joined only where the negative supply lead enters the board. There's also a simple power supply decoupling network for the LFO, and a snubbing capacitor (C9) that rounds off the edges of the output of the 555.
