Blackstar Ht-20 footswitch

I'm just trying to wrap my head around this design.
On the amp channel footswitch, it's wired like in the picture. I've never seen one where a shorted out led  works. How does this work? What are they triggering in the amp? I like that it makes a redundant connection if the led were to fail.

Anyone? I know it's a crazy design but it works and I wanna understand it.

My guess is that the amp is backwards, meaning it defaults on channel 2 thus lighting the led on the amp and the led on the pedal. When clicking the pedal the circuit is completed on the relay to make the amp switch to channel one while shorting out the leds to make them turn off.

Is this the only thing that could be happening here?
