I built a couple of modified Fuzz Faces based on Stellan's Fuzz Face which is an NPN design. I used 2N388A transistors from Parts Express. (search for 2N388A) I had a hard time biasing the 2nd transistor. The collector voltage was too high when measured from ground (red probe of DMM on collector, black on ground).

I ended up putting a 56k (!) resistor between the collector and 10K trim of the 2nd transistor. After all this, I guess I would recommend putting a 100K trim instead of the 10K trim to avoid having to guess. Simply adjust the 100K pot until you get somewhere around 4.5V-6.1V. Or until it sounds right.
