Title: Help!
Post by: Blueman95 on July 29, 2013, 08:00:49 PM
Hi everyone,

Hoping somebody out there has had this problem before and can help out

I am totally new to DIY pedals and have just (nearly!) finished my first silicon fuzz pedal. The problem I'm having is that the pedal works when out of the enclosure but when connected to the casing I am getting no sound whatsoever. Is this a common problem for first time builders? Can this be fixed without starting again from scratch? If so, how do i go about it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Danny

What kind of power jack are you using?

Using a boss 9v ac adaptor.

I mean the jack. Like the part that is mounted to the enclosure. Is it metal or plastic?

Sorry, it's a metal one. It's also a stereo jack if that makes any difference? I do have a couple of spare plastic jacks to hand, would it be worth changing it for a plastic one?

need plastic (unless your enclosure in non-conductive) or you'll short it out

That's your problem. The metal jack is shorting the power supply. The enclosure is grounded by the in and out jacks and the positive 9 volts is on the barrel of the plug touching the enclosure. Try an insulated power jack like this.

Thanks. I've actually got one of those. I'll try that one instead and let you know if it works. Appreciate the help.

That was my very first troubleshoot on my first build, a Gristleizer. Used a metal jack. Luckily, the spark I saw when I plugged it in gave it away.

Ahhh... the good ole days.  :icon_lol:

The Gristleizer was your first build.. and that was your only problem? Impressive.

He said "first," not "only."
