Title: Modding a wah enclosure - Ideas?
Post by: suryabeep on November 25, 2018, 08:38:34 PM
Hello all,
I'm planning on buying a dirt cheap POS Daphon wah and ripping out the guts to make something else just so I can use the enclosure and treadle and potentiometer. What are your best ideas?
Something I thought of was controlling a fuzz pot on a fuzz face circuit using the treadle pot. I may also alter it to an expression pedal (but I don't know how to, any tips?). I saw that bandmemes666 has a similar thing where he controls a tremolo pedals rate pot.
Go ham!

You can get an actual expression pedal for like $30 .
Which may be a little more universal, by then adding expression control to a circuit you like.  Some stuff is not so easily controlled by expression, but most stuff wired as a variable resistor is pretty easy to set up that way. Most Wahs have a 100k pot in them (maybe most?) Which kind of limits usefulness as well.  If you're really going for a hack and slash just about anything can be made to have expression control.

I've tried using one as an expression pedal on a distortion/OD, to act as an external gain control, but it didn't work out as great in the real world as I was envisioning it in my mind.

I've decided on putting in a Phase 45 using the pcb from GGG. It seems that the single 500kC pot can be replaced with the 100kB pot that is already in the wah so I should be good on that front.
Do you have any other ideas for future mods?

I used one of those for my very first foxx phaser clone.  Didn't know what i was doing but it was easy to work with.

They are very plastic but hardy enough.  I recommend getting plenty of aluminium tape for insulation. O

External pot pedal trimming (e.g. Fuzz bias) sounds "terrible"..
(even if your foot has a 10-turn trimpot accuracy, wah pot doesn't..) :icon_lol:

IMHO, that kind of adjustment should only be used with relative delicate-immune settings..
(like Volume or Gain - it might work well on a variable filter, too..)
