Title: Modding a RAT2
Post by: rangermaster on July 05, 2021, 12:34:05 AM
Hi there.

Is there anyone that knows how to mod a RAT2(OP07) to get more low end? I think the pedal is just a little to bright for me and i play on strat so i need a little more low end. I use the gain knob around 4/5.. so if it decrease gain that's no problem. As long as the character stays the same.

I also have some LM308AN opamps laying around. Is it worthy replacing it with the OP07 ?
Thanks.

Referring to the below page, in the high pass filter section, you could experiment with increasing C5 or C6 (I don't know how they would be numbered on your board). Keep in mind that by letting more bass in pre clipping, you will likely change the character.

Tnx for the reply. I added some photos of my rat2 to be sure. See attachment.

I got a RAt that had the Ruetz mod done to it already.  I added in a switch to switch it in/out.  Easy and cheap (and pretty easily reversible if you haven't drilled a hole for a switch).  I can't comment too much on the sounds though.  My son "borrowed" it from me soon after and it has lived on his pedalboard ever since.

That ruetz mod looks interesting.

I'll replace the 47ohm resistor with a B1K pot en i think i'll replace the OP07 with a LM308AN.

Also maybe replace the C10(10nf), C7(100pf), C8(30pf) with silver mica's ?

If this makes you aesthetically happy, why not..?? :icon_wink:

Ok. So i just did the ruetz mod and replaced the OP07 with a LM308an.

I can test how it sounds tonight.

Maybe this will be a good tip for some other guys that wants to mod this pedal:

•I wired the stock 47ohm resistor on a dpdt switch(2 right legs)
•2 wires from pcb(where the 47ohm resistor used to be) on the 2 center legs of the dpdt switch
•And 2 wires on the 2 left legs of the dpdt to the B1K pot(in/wiper)

Now when the toggle switch is pointed to the pot, the pot is activated. When towards the other way it's the stock rat.

Update: just played with louder volume on my AC30. Sounds awesome! You wont get a any extra low-end and the gain decreases a little but the harsh high-end is much more under control. It still has the same character as before but just a little less gain(still plenty!). It also sounds to me it's more dynamic when guitar volume is rolled down a little.

If you want deeper bass extension - quite different from ruetz which is really just top-end gain reduction - try the BB mod:
