Title: Deep Blue Delay bypass popping
Post by: soggybag on April 13, 2025, 12:12:47 PM
I built this clone of the deep blue delay. It has loud popping when bypassed. I tried adding a 100k resistor at the output to ground with no effect.

Wire 3PDT switch for IN & OUT grounded when bypassed and LED anti-pop configuration..

It has posted over a trillion times so no direct pic.. sorry..

I wouldn't ground the input on a delay because when you turn it on, there will be no output at all until the delay time is past.  Leave the input operational all the time so you don't get this "gulp" of nothing when you switch it on.

Less than half a second (for delay max time) shouldn't be an issue, should it..??

If you built the circuit exactly per the schematic posted, your pop is likely coming from the lack of a pulldown resistor on the output. Add a 100k resistor to ground between the 1uF output cap and the 1k resistor in series to the circuit output if possible.

That was tried in the first post, 2 days back?

I wasn't clear exactly on where the 100k to ground was wired by the OP. Putting it BEFORE the 1k resistor on the output should work a little better (with the 1k resistor in series with the output acting as a current limiting resistor for any DC present on the output cap).

Could also be leakage on the output cap if an electro was used. You could always use a voltmeter to test on the output side of the cap (once the pulldown resistor is added) to check for DC. I've had that happen a time or two on pedals that popped loudly.
